Thursday Thunder: D-Day Anniversary Edition

  • by

Today marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the invasion of Normandy by the Allied forces during World War II. I don’t feel like I can articulate anything much new about the significance, the horror, and the bravery of that event. I’m just going to share a few videos instead.

As a part of commemorating the 75th anniversary, a massive fly-over of still-airworthy C-47s is planned. This tells the story of the logistics involved with getting the American contingent “across the pond” to participate.
For some warriors, the invasion actually started the night before, as they loaded into C-47s or towed gliders and jumped into the darkness. Let’s ride along and get a little taste of what taking the express exit from a C-47 on a static line was like.
Finally, a fantastic video from last year’s EAA Air Venture. Several of these aircraft were also featured in the first video, as they are participating in the D-Day Squadron flyovers.
