Stealth Fighters? | Let’s Play Wing Commander II – Mission D, Niven and Ghorah Khar Alt Systems

  • by

Remember way back to the beginning of this game? When our hero is up on charges because no one believes that Kilrathi stealth fighters exist? Well guess what? It took the cats ten years or so to rebuild their manufacturing after losing the Ghorah Khar shipyards, but sure enough, they’re back. And now we get to meet them.

The two missions are largely identical. There’s one more Strakha fighter in the Ghorah Khar Alt scenario, but in both, we’re in a P-64 Ferret on a solo patrol. The thing about Strakha fighters is that they’re kind of a one-trick pony. With a light armament and weak shields, the Strakhas would be easy prey if it weren’t for their annoying habit of trying to shoot you in the face, then cloaking until they get on your tail. The other problem against the Ferret is that the speed differential makes it easy to accidently ram them. Which tends to be catastrophic in the Ferret.

In either system, we get back to urgently tell Angel about the stealth fighters. Except… our data disk is missing. Again. With no wingman and no flight recorder data, there’s still no proof that these secret fighters actually exist. You’d think that some other pilot would have encountered them and survived to tell the tale by now, but I guess not.

Either way, the losing and winning paths converge once again. From the Niven System, the Concordia jumps to Ghorah Khar to defend the friendly Kilrathi there. From the Ghorah Khar Alternate System, the Concordia stays right where it is to continue defending the system.
