Today is one week completed at the new job. I counted them up, and since I started my first “official” job at sixteen, I’ve gone through a total of sixteen first days on the job. Most of them, regardless of the industry or actual work, have been pretty similar. It’s all learning the ropes, trying to understand what my role is, and figuring out the important details of where’s the kitchen, where are the bathrooms, and when do I get paid. With two outlying exceptions, every first week has been great.
Still, first impressions at the new gig are positive. The office environment feels a lot more like the free-wheeling developer environments I knew in Washington. We’re making meaningful products, things that help good cops do their jobs better, allow first responders from different departments to coordinate better, and make people’s interactions with their local government agencies easier. That’s good stuff. Also, there are dogs!
Now I just have to learn the code base, learn the source control, and remember how to write code in languages I haven’t used in a long time. Piece of cake!
